Bill Bishop talks about “The Big Sort” on TEXAS POLITICS TODAY

By deece

Once again this week, TEXAS POLITICS TODAY goes behind the headlines to inform, enlighten and inspire you about how Texas politics really works.  TEXAS POLITICS TODAY airs on Wednesdays from 2:30 to 3:00 p.m. CDT on KOOP, FM 91.7 on the radio dial and streaming live over the Internet at www.koop.org

Our guest on Wednesday, May 28, is Bill Bishop, co-author of “The Big Sort ,” a fascinating book about how America is becoming more diverse and its communities are becoming more homogeneous.  As a result, our economics, culture and politics are becoming more polarized.

“The Big Sort” started as a series of articles that Bishop and his co-author, Robert Cushing, wrote for the Austin American-Statesman called “The Great Divide.”  The articles attracted a lot of attention and discussion when they were published in 2004, including an ABC News special report called “A Country Divided: Examining the State of Our Union ,” hoisted by George Stephanopoulos.

“The Big Sort” looks at the polarization of our living patterns and examines its implications for local and regional economies (what happens when all the creative people leave?), for the culture wars, and of course for politics.  Bill will offer some fascinating insights into how “the big sort” affects national, state and local politics in this election year.

Also this week: David Kobierowski’s calendar of coming political events and the fun-filled game, “Are You Smarter Than a KOOP Listener?,” which will pit Bill against one of our listeners in a Texas trivia contest.  Be sure to listen to the show and call in when we play the game!
